New Year’s "Resolve to Expect Little": January 2022 Prompt
“Resolve to Expect Little”
The January prompt is inspired by Nadia Bolz-Weber who is an ordained Lutheran Pastor, founder of House for All Sinners & Saints in Denver, CO, and the author of three NYT bestselling memoirs.
Our New Year’s resolutions usually involve to do better, diet, exercise, change friends, take classes, find estranged relatives.
Nadia makes the revolutionary proposal that we give ourselves the gift of really low expectations.
“May you expect so little of yourself that you can be super proud of the smallest of accomplishments.
May you expect so little of the people in your life that you actually notice and cherish every small lovely thing about them.
May you expect so little of the supply chain and the service industry that you notice more of what you do get and less of what you don't and then just tip really well anyhow.”
If we resolve to expect little, then we will not be disappointed, but may even find joy. If we don’t, we will not be a failure.
So with Nadia, I “wish you a Happy as possible New Year.”
